Category Groups can be defined to group different types of asset categories together. These groups are used to determine the type of information that can be recorded against each asset in the Category Group as well as providing an extra level of analysis in the various reports in Fixed Assets. You can define custom fields to hold the type of information to be stored against each Category Group. These custom fields can be defined to accept free text, drop down lists , dates, choices (yes or no), currency, and numeric.
For example, you can define a category group for vehicles and against that group you can define that a custom entry called 'fleet number' is stored. You can also define further fields at a later date, for example you may later on decide to include 'engine serial number'. You can add, delete, and edit custom fields from the Action button on the Category Groups form.
Tip: You can restrict these actions by changing your users' security permissions on the System Manager - Maintenance - User Profiles form.
Category groups work with Asset Categories to provide a structure like this in Fixed Assets. Asset Categories are used to define relevant details for groups of assets in Fixed Assets, for example the expected life, depreciation method and depreciation rate, and Nominal Ledger accounts.
